new on dvd: a Rock and a were-rabbit
There’s new crap for everyone this week… and I do mean crap. The dreadful Doom (read my review / buy it at Amazon) brings the first-person-shooter-flick genre down to a new low with a sequence that actually looks like a first-person-shooter game. Just Like Heaven (read my review / buy it at Amazon) is the chalk-on-a-board awful rom-com that Reese Witherspoon would probably like us all to forget — she’s gonna have to win that Oscar for Walk the Line just to make up for all the cinematic karma she lost on this one.
Good thing Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (read my review / buy it at Amazon) also arrives on DVD today — it’s one of the best movies of 2005, animated or not. Other good stuff new on DVD: Cameron Crowe’s underappreciated Elizabethtown (not reviewed / buy it at Amazon), in which Orlando Bloom proves he’s got what it takes as a romantic lead, and Moonlighting: Season 3 (not reviewed / buy it at Amazon), which some fans consider the show’s best year — it features that Taming of the Shrew episode (all iambic pentameter, all the time) and the Mulberry Street dream sequence.
