TiVo this! can’t-miss geek movies on TV, 06.01-06.04
(A truncated TiVo this! this week — sorry. The holiday weekend threw me way outta whack, and I’m still catching up.)
I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned — there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.
(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)
4:30AM: The Gong Show Movie. Oh. My. God.
10:00PM: The Conversation. Thriller from the time when people didn’t like the idea of living in a constant-surveillance society. Also: impossibly young Harrison Ford in a small role.
9:00AM: Silent Running. It seems like this is the sciffy movie Sundance turns to when it doesn’t know what else to air. Eh, who cares: It’s got cute robots.
3:00AM: Frailty. Bill Paxton’s directorial debut, and it’s freaky as hell.
8:00PM: Heathers. Perhaps the greatest movie ever made. Or maybe I only feel this way because the hell of high school was so fresh in my memory when this seared its way into my psyche in 1989.
Planet Earth gets its revenge all day. Take that, puny humans!
11:00AM: Deep Core
3:00PM: Maximum Velocity
5:00PM: Path of Destruction
7:00PM: Earthquake: Nature Unleashed
Mad-science marathon! Put on your lab coat, send Igor out for snacks, and turn the brain in the jar to face the TV so it can watch, too!
8:15PM: Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
10:00PM: The Nutty Professor (1963)
12:00m: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920!)
1:15AM: The Incredible Shrinking Man
2:45AM: The Quatermass Xperiment
4:15AM: The Time Machine (1960)
8:00PM: Time Bandits. Terry Gilliam, will you marry me?
(Technorati tags: Turner Classic Movies, Sundance Channel, Sci Fi Channel, TV, television)
