TiVo this! can’t-miss geek movies on TV, 07.17-07.23
I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned — there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.
(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)
10:15AM: On Borrowed Time. Death takes an unexpected “holiday” in this 1939 flick when an old man (Lionel Barrymore) and his grandson chase the Grim Reaper up a tree and keep him there. Weird.
12:05AM: Memento Mori. J-horror directed by Tae-Yong Kim and Kyu-Dong Min.
8:00PM: The Clairvoyant. Claude Rains and Fay Wray in a flick about a fake psychic who turns out not to be so fake after all. Shades of Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost? From 1935.
6:00AM: The Scarlet Pimpernel. The 1935 classic swashbuckler with Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon.
9:30AM: The Uninvited. Truly atmospheric haunted-house story from 1944, starring Ray Milland.
2:00PM: Soylent Green. I know it’s cheesy, but this one still scares the crap out of me.
3:00AM: Alien Nation: The Udara Legacy. This 1997 TV film is as close as we got to the terrific Alien Nation TV series getting wrapped up. So enjoy, and weep.
