TiVo this! can’t-miss geek movies on TV, 07.24-07.30
I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned — there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.
(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)
2:45PM: Hold On!. Oh. My. God. The pop band Herman’s Hermits stars in this 1966 movie about a space ship named after them. How can I not watch something so impossibly goofy?
11:00PM: Mystery Men. One of the best superhero spoofs ever.
1:15PM: Flipper. It’s transspecies friendship and acquatic action-adventure galore! And — good lord — it stars Chuck Connors.
2:45PM: Flipper’s New Adventure. You know what would be cool? Flipper vs. Lassie.
11:00PM: Hulk. I know, I know: I’m the only person on the planet who likes Ang Lee’s arthouse comic-book flick.
2:00AM: The Spirit of the Beehive. Strange 1973 movie about two girls searching for Frankenstein’s monster.
12:00n: Super Size Me. Well, it’s kind of a horror movie…
The all-day marathon starts out all Martian-y and then expands its horizons beyond our puny solar system:
11:00AM: Mission to Mars
1:30PM: Red Planet
4:00PM: Star Trek: First Contact
8:00PM: The Land That Time Forgot. Doug McClure versus dinosaurs and cavemen and stuff. AKA Triumph of the White Guy.
10:00PM: Tarzan, the Ape Man. Johnny Weissmuller, the original himbo, as the jungle boy. From 1932.
1:30AM: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Imagine how awesome this must be to watch in the middle of the night with all the lights off…
4:00AM: 2010. …this one maybe not so much.
