artisanal film reviews | by maryann johanson

10 years of Flick Filosopher: dark in the city tonight

I still take heat for this one: my negative review of Dark City:

The plot is the same hoary device that’s brought down many an episode of Star Trek: Aliens are experimenting on humans in order to learn what makes us tick. The aliens are some kinda jellyfish-type things that inhabit the dead bodies of humans — men only, natch. Imagine an army of Emperor Palpatines from Star Wars, and you’ve got it. Dr. Schreber (Sutherland) helps them with their nasty experiments — You. *gasp* Can. *gasp* Tell. *gasp* He’s. *gasp* Evil. *gasp* Because. *gasp* He. *gasp* Talks. *gasp* Like. *gasp* This.

Everyone keeps telling me that is a pre-Matrix Matrix, and how can I love that film and not this one? Let me count the ways…

I’ll never come to terms with you on this one, Ms. Johanson. I remember that review from way back when, and still just can’t see how you’d prefer The Matrix to Dark City.

And I’m sure you can’t see how I’d prefer Dark City to the Matrix, too, but hey, I’m an opinionated loudmouth in your posting section. Obviously I’m more right than the critic with ten years of experience under her belt. :)
