my week at the movies: ‘Eastern Promises,’ ‘Run, Fat Boy, Run,’ ‘Death Sentence,’ ‘The Hunting Party,’ more

it’s like how much more black could it be?

I thought last week that I’d have a movie-free week this week, but that’s not working out. There are so many movies opening from September onward toward the end of the year that if I don’t get a head start, I’ll be drowning before I know it. So it’s a pretty regular schedule for me this week: four movies… five, if you count the one I’m gonna see for the second time. And oh boy: I’m counting it.

I’m looking forward to Eastern Promises [opens limited September 14; goes wide September 21], because it reunites David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen — man, I loved A History of Violence. And with this rating — “rated R for strong brutal and bloody violence, some graphic sexuality, language and nudity” — I’m guessing this will be more along the same lines. Excellent.

none. none more black…

All I needed to know about Run, Fat Boy, Run [opens wide October 26] is that it stars Simon Pegg and Hank Azaria, two of my boyfriends. So I’m there.

I’m still waiting to hear if there’s going to be a press screening of Death Sentence this week, and time is running out: the movie opens wide August 31. But I’ll pay for it on Friday if I have to, though, because it looks so deliciously cheesy.

Writer-director Richard Shepard gave us the underrated The Matador and the barely seen (but shoulda been) Oxygen. His new film, The Hunting Party [opens limited September 7; expands September 14; goes wide September 21] looks just as intriguing: it’s about journalists tracking down a war criminal. How 21st century…

The movie I’m gonna see for the second time? 3:10 to Yuma [sneak preview September 2; opens wide September 7]. Is this just about the goddamned sexiest poster you’ve ever seen?:

And the movie itself is so damn awesome — and Russell Crowe is so damn intense — that I need to see the movie again, just, you know, to double check how good it is. And hey! There will be public sneak previews of the flick on Sunday night, so you don’t have to wait till next Friday if you don’t want to.
