quickie giveaway: ‘Gracie’ DVD, ‘Lust, Caution’ CD soundtrack, ‘Cinema16: European Short Films’ DVD, ‘The Film Crew: Killers from Space’ and ‘Wild Women of Wongo’ DVDs, ‘Commando: Director’s Cut’ DVD (now closed)
The coming-of-age sport flick Gracie — starring Carly Schroeder and Elisabeth Shue and based on Shue’s own girlhood — was released on DVD this week. The scoop? Gracie is an inspirational film about a teenage girl who, after the death of her brother, decides to petition the school board to allow her to play on the all-boys high school varsity soccer team. Undeterred by the obstacles she faces from her family and community, Gracie finds the inner strength she never knew she had and perseveres to change everyone’s beliefs of what she is capable of — including herself. WINNERS: Johannah, Eileen, Barbara, Rebecca, Krista. (Buy the DVD at Amazon.) (Read my review of the film.)
The soundtrack for Ang Lee’s new film Lust, Caution — a startling erotic espionage thriller, set in WWII-era Shanghai, based on the short story by Eileen Chang and starring Tony Leung and Tang Wei — will be released on September 25. The CD showcases the original musical score by Golden Globe Award-winning, Academy Award-nominated composer Alexandre Desplat (The Queen, The Painted Veil) and features his delicate and deliberate compositions. WINNERS: Michelle, Karen, Ron. (Buy the CD at Amazon.)
The new two-disc collection Cinema16: European Short Films — featuring short films by Christopher Nolan, Lars Von Trier, Lynne Ramsay, Ridley Scott, Roy Andersson, Mathieu Kassovitz (“La Haine”) and Nanni Morettti, as well as award-winning and celebrated shorts including Anders Thomas Jensen’s Oscar winner “Election Night,” Juan Solanas’ Cannes Jury Prize winner “The Man Without a Head,” and Toby MacDonald’s BAFTA nominated “Je T’aime John Wayne” — will be released on September 25. WINNERS: Jennifer, Doug, Joseph, Richard, Yvonne. (Buy the DVD at Amazon.)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 alums Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are up to their old tricks again, skewering bad old movies and releasing the end products direct to DVD under the collective nom de snark of The Film Crew. With Killers from Space, they skewer Peter Graves and an unbelievable alien plot to conquer Earth using giant insects and reptiles. In Wild Women of Wongo, they take on a cruel experiment by Mother Nature and Father Time to convince the beautiful women of a tropical island that the only men who exist are the ugly apelike creatures they share their island with. WINNER: Cindy. (Buy the Killers from Space DVD at Amazon.) (Buy the Wild Women of Wongo DVD at Amazon.)
Commando: Director’s Cut was recently released, because the world has been clamoring for Mark L. Lester’s original vision for this 1985 martial-arts action nonsense starring the current governor of California and 2012 Republican presidential candidate, Arnold Schwarzenegger. This new DVD contains both the theatrical version and the director’s cut as well as full-length audio commentary by Lester. WINNER: Shaun. (Buy the DVD at Amazon.)
