new on DVD: ‘Ratatouille,’ ‘Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series,’ ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry’
• Ratatouille [buy it]. From my review:
Oh, but there is joy in this movie, this Ratatouille, this new marvel from Pixar and Brad Bird, whose babies I want to have, he’s so brilliant. Not easy joy: hard-won joy, the best kind, which comes from struggle and pain and sacrifice and almost losing what you desire most. It fills you up, this wonderful, wonderful movie, with just the simple yet profound connection it’s possible to make with another creature, even it that creature is merely a cartoon rat. (And the question is, then, If we can understand a rat, why can’t we at least get along with other humans? There is no answer here, but the question lingers…)
• Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series [buy it]. From my blogging:
Oh, I make fun, but I do that only cuz I’m so embarrassed that I have, once again, fallen head over heels for Doctor Who, and for the Doctor. I had a few Who-free months there during which I forgot how deeply obsessive I can be over this silly show — how deeply obsessive I have been about this show since I was about 13 years old. But that’s fine when you’re a kid. I should have outgrown this nonsense by now, shouldn’t I?
• I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry [buy it]. From my review:
Please to laugh at icky queery flamboyant homos so this rejected episode of The Odd Couple can teach you a lesson: that it’s wrong — wrong, we tell you — to laugh at icky queery flamboyant homos.
