opening wide Christmas Day: ‘The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep,’ ‘Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem,’ ‘The Great Debaters,’ ‘Juno’

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
Cutesy flick about a wee Scottish lad in World War II who bonds with a baby Loch Ness Monster is good for the kids… and if they ask for a Nessie for their birthdays, you can give ’em sea monkeys and they’ll be fine. (my review)

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
Hey, sports fans! Word is that the Intergalactic Open between the universe’s top pro limb-ripping teams will take place this year on sleepy little Planet Earth, where the natives are so peace-loving they think ice hockey is a violent sport and are likely to mistake the IG Open for open warfare. Idiots. (not screened for critics, but I may check this out later in the week)

The Great Debaters
Small-fry debating team goes up against Harvard. Did I mention they were black? And poor in the middle of the Great Depression? But they’ve got spirit, I tell ya! Denzel Washington’s second flick is the feel-good movie of the season! (my review)

Juno
Girl gets pregant, girl decides to have baby, girl gets snarky. Up-and-comer Ellen Page gets knocked up and knocks us out in this flip side to that other movie from this summer about finding oneself in an unexpectedly family way. Also, that skinny kid from Superbad is the baby’s father, and that’s just hilarious. (my review)
