opening wide this weekend: ‘Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!,’ ‘Doomsday,’ ‘Never Back Down’
Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!
I was pretty psyched for this until someone explained that it wasn’t Horton Hears a Doctor Who but was, instead, Hollywood doing another injustice upon the memory of poor Ted Geisel. (my review)
It’s the end of the world as we know it — again — when disease ravages the human race and turns the survivors into monsters. Or is it a meteor that crashes and destroys the atmosphere? Or did gas run out and create a Mad Max-opolyse? Maybe they should have just called it 28 Weeks Beyond Thunderdome… (not screened for critics; I might see it; I might not)
Never Back Down
It’s Fight Club meets The Karate Kid when a rebellious teen — aren’t they all? — is lured into an illegal boxing tournament and teams up with a martial arts master. It’s just like when Luke Skywalker learned how to use the Force, only not. (I skipped the press screening of this one, and I’m not sorry I did)
