lemme know what you think of ShareThis

UPDATE: The ShareThis widget seemed to be slowing down the site for people other than me, so I’ve switched to trying out AddThis, which unfortunately does not have an email feature, but the site-slowdown has disappeared with the removal of ShareThis, so that’s a good thing. The experiment continues.

You may have noticed the new “ShareThis” feature at the bottom of every post: it’s for sending a link to social networking sites, for emailing a link to friends, that kind of thing. It’s an experiment at the moment, so let me know what you think of it: whether it’s useful, if you have any problems or issues with it, and so on. It seems to me that it’s slowing down the loading of pages, and if that’s the case, that’s a big problem, and something that is a mark against it. But I’ll leave it up for a while and see how it goes.

  • A good way to avoid loading problems for javascript is to load them inside an iframe or (if you’re good at CSS) an absolute DIV that loads at the end of the page. Either way will ensure your content loads first, and fastest.

That being said, I didn’t notice any slowness at all.

JavaScript should ideally go in a single script block *after* the HTML document body; that way the whole page content renders before the JS gets parsed and run.

That said, I doubt the ShareThis is impacting page load times on MAJ’s site anywhere near as much as all the ad content and the associated CSS and JavaScript (I counted more than fifteen JavaScript includes on the site home page). So as long as all of the assorted ad content is there — which I totally understand is a necessary evil — I think the ShareThis link probably has no net impact.

It takes more than six minutes for me to load any given page on this site through my high speed DSL connection now. Most of this time seems to be spent waiting for “ll.atdmt.com” to respond. I’m not sure if that’s related to the ShareThis or if it’s one of your ad servers, but it’s making the site pretty much unusable for me.

  • MaryAnn

Six minutes is ridiculous. How long has that been happening?

I’m not sure how to track down which ad is trying to call “ll.atdmt.com” — it doesn’t actually appear in the source code — so I don’t know which ad is calling that. But I’m guessing it’s not hanging most people or traffic would have dropped off to nothing.

I don’t see ll.atdmt.com in any of the scripts on this page either. the main atdmt.com page says it’s a part of Atlas Solutions… But I’ve reloaded this site a couple dozen times looking for that URL in my scripts list, and it isn’t showing up. My best guess is you’ve got some spyware on your system, JSW. Try running some ant-malware and anti-spyware programs like MalwareBytes and Spybot.

Then again, if flickfilosopher is the only website that isn’t loading for you, it’s gotta be something here… unfortunately I don’t see it :(

Also, speaking of ads and such. MaryAnn have you looked into ProjectWonderful.com? It is amazingly cool (and lucrative).

    Just a couple of days.

I’m running Firefox on Linux and have tried loading the page from two different computers, getting the same problem on both. The ll.atdmt.com problem only seems to occur on article pages like this one. On the main page, it’s widget.sharethis.com that causes the delays.

I don’t see it in the scripts, but I do see, when I look at the browser activity window, that I am accessing that URL as pages load here, but it’s not holding up anything.

I haven’t heard of it. But define “lucrative”…

    Just a couple of days.

The only thing that’s changed in that time is the addition of ShareThis. I think I may have to delete it…

Project Wonderful is an ad service that allows advertisers to bid on ad space in real time. So if there is an increase in traffic it drives up the ad revenue.

It’s become rather big in the webcomic world and other types of sites that are based around regular updates. You may have seen it in the form of little “Your ad here, right now: $XX.XX” boxes under some ad space.

The whole process is open so you could take a look and see what other web sites with similar traffic are making.

  • You know, as in money! :) Ryan H summed it up pretty nicely.

My sites don’t get near as much traffic as yours do, I’m sure, but they pay for themselves (and a little extra) solely through PW ads.

  • Ryan H

Oh, and the loss of the email feature is a non event. any email consisting of ‘check out this website’ from a non personal address is going to get filtered by 99% of spam walls anyways.

  • JoshDM

http://www.projectwonderful.com is always a fun alternative to ads.

  • MaryAnn

From what I can see on Project Wonderful, no one is making much money at all.

  • JoshDM

Holy crap. I made my PW post without reading any other posts.

    :|

There already was a PW conversation going on. :O

  • We’ve received tons of valuable feedback in regard to the ShareThis load times, and the consensus is that ShareThis just needs to be faster. We couldn’t agree more, and we have good news! We’re undergoing a back-end redesign that will overhaul ShareThis with some serious optimization solutions.

First off, all of the ShareThis code is being completely optimized for efficiency and speed. This new optimized code is then tightly compressed with Yahoo! User Interface Compressor to reduce its overall byte footprint. Also, all ‘heavy’ processing will use AJAX to pass requests to our servers after the widget is loaded for total caching of the widget’s HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Most importantly ShareThis will utilize a content delivery network (CDN) from Akamai for near 100% uptime and super fast delivery.

What this means for you: a ShareThis widget that will load instantly. Look for these optimizations in Q3.

  • I’m not sure if this is related but I’m really getting tired of the MIME/Quicktime prompts I seem to get on this site every time I access it from a certain location. The funny thing is that I can access all my regular sites just fine.

It’s just this one that has a problem.

  • MaryAnn

I don’t know what that means, Tonio. What, exactly, is happening? Is this something new, and if so, do you remember when it started happening? Or has this been going on for a long time?
