weekend open thread: April showers edition

Next weekend will start my new regular weekend discussion of Doctor Who, as was suggested in last weekend’s open thread. At least that’s the plan. I know I often say I’m gonna get to stuff at a particular time and then it turns out it’s a week or a month or a year later before it actually comes to fruition. Usually that’s because I’m simply enjoying lolling on the sofa watching soaps and eating bonbons too much to do any damn thing else. You know how that is.

In other news, I’ve been elected to the Governing Committee of the Online Film Critics Society, with new fellow GC members Eric Snider and Scott Weinberg. And we’ve got a lot of work to do. So my sleep deficit just got bigger.

Anyway, talk amongst yourselves. Be nice.

    I knew it!

    You and your bon-bons… slacker…

Well, I just watched the gobsmackingly bizarre last episode of the US Life on Mars. Now admittedly i haven’t seen much of it, but what a strange ending.

I give them props for trying to come up with a solution that is different to the UK version, and it’s certainly not a solution that i heard anyone put forward (for either show)but wow….it’s just awful and wrong.

I am writing a nasty, angry email to iTunes to tell them that they are idiots for dubbing “let the right one in” into english instead of just running it with the original subtitles. They DUBBED IT, BADLY. WTF?

  • Bill

“They DUBBED IT, BADLY. WTF?” – Anne-Kari

Oh god, it was bad. Why would they do that? I don’t know who “they” are, but I’m guessing it wasn’t itunes. Was there a warning anywhere that it was dubbed? I don’t remember seeing anything when I ordered it. Bastards.

  • Jan Willem

@ Anne-Kari: It seems the subtitles for the DVD and Blu-Ray are different – and worse – than the theatrical ones. There was quiet a controversy about it here. Strange to say, the text of the poorly acted dub appears to be more faithful to the original than the new subtitles. Due to fan outrage, a second generation featuring “theatrical subtitles” appears to be in the making, so buyers beware…
And thank you for not smoking! Keep it up.

  • Anne-Kari

Yeah, I didn’t see any warning on the iTunes profile before I rented it, the bastards. I am so annoyed.

Thanks Jan – I’m still not smoking, which is probably why my outrage over the whole dubbing thing is a little bit out of proportion :)

On another note, is anyone still watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles?

Anyone have comments on the rather abrupt events of the most recent episode?

  • Bill

Headline: “‘Fast & Furious’ shatters box office records”

    Ummm…what?

  • amanohyo

Comfort food, Bill. When times are uncertain, people love, love, love a steaming pile of nonthreatening, predictable comfort food. Marketing up the wazoo helps too.

  • amanohyo

Oh, speaking of comfort food, I just read an article claiming that men usually have comfort foods that requires a long preparation time (stews, steaks, cheesy casseroles, etc.), while women primarily have comfort foods that are ready-made because they pick up on the expectation that they’re the ones who have to actually prepare the food (speak of the devil, a toy oven commercial with a bunch of girls is on cartoon network right now).

I naturally distrust venus/mars-ish generalizations, but my comfort foods are Kimchi Chige (stew), mushroom pan pizza, and chili dogs while my wife likes dry cereal, artificial crab, and bread, so we fit the model reasonably well (although I actually enjoy preparing the food too). I’m just wondering if this hypothesis rings true to any people here? Surely there are some stew-loving women and chocoholic men out there… right?

On *Sarah Connor*: I’m still watching (though not as intently as I once was), and whew, yeah, there were some shocking developments in the most recent episode…

  • Mark

    Potential spoilers

there were some shocking developments in the most recent episode…

I was floored by how quickly things happened. I’m pretty up-and-down about the show, but I thought the way they did what they did was surprising. In a good way.

  • MaryAnn

And then they all but reversed them in the final episode.

Oh, and now the show is cancelled. So there.

  • Mark

Oh, and now the show is cancelled. So there.

    Is it? Reports vary.

(I liked how they wrapped up the season, though….)
