subscription drive update: off and running

And now, a tale of freelancer dilemma:

I heard the other day about some freelance work going at a big entertainment journalism outfit: let’s just say that it’s one of my corporate competitors. It’s crappy electronic-sweatshop type work that pays shit: let’s just say that if I was able to put in the hours they’re looking for — about three 40-hour weeks — I would clear, after taxes, just about enough to pay my rent (which is, on a New York City scale, really cheap without being actually hellhole-level). And for that crap work and crap pay, it is expected that the worker will be something of an Internet expert and a very good writer, and will bring with them a deep knowledge of pop culture. The job description says, in so many words, “Please be totally awesome and brilliant, but don’t expect to get paid as if you are.”

I seriously considered pursuing this work. And then I rejected the idea. Here’s why: If I were sitting around doing nothing and desperate to find some work, I would have jumped on it. If I were the kind of writer who is slaving away at my Great American Novel but hasn’t yet let anyone read it and has no idea if I’ll ever finish or it’ll ever get published and I needed to earn the rent money, I would have jumped on it.
But I’m not that kind of writer, and I’m not lacking for work. I have more work to do here than I can bear to think about. I have you guys — all you wonderful readers out there — who like what I write, or who enjoy being infuriated by what I write, or who enjoy the quick-witted, smart, funny conversations that often occur among commenters after I post something, or all of the above. If I took that work, I would be treading water — financially and creatively — in order to further enrich a big big BIG corporation that wouldn’t give a shit about me, or about what I really have to say about the stuff it’s covering. And it would take me away from amusing and infuriating you guys, and hosting what is, frankly, one of the best damn parties on the Net. I feel free to be so immodest because it’s not me who makes it the best damn party, it’s all of you.

So I’m asking if, the next time you drop by the party, instead of bringing a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine, you sign up to give a buck a month. Just one dollar every month. If you’re in a position to do so. I know everyone isn’t.

    Although a freelance position, the description there seems in keeping with just about every vaguely creative media position (writing, advertising, marketing, production management, PR) I’ve seen in the last few years:
    Successful applicants will be a dynamic, diligent person who is fun to work with, flexible, an endless font of ideas, willing to go the extra mile, start early, finish late, willing to take on anything, brimming with sticktoitiveness, skilled in (-list of diverse software you can’t possibly afford legitimately at entry level, and wouldn’t be applying for a job at this pay scale if you had the required years under your belt to call yourself ‘experienced’-)
    And so on.
    It’s getting quite ridiculous. The people in charge of sections and so on, by contrast, usually get very dry, specific and often much shorter job descriptions.

    Somewhat beside the point, but there you go. (no subscrip from me just yet, sorry. A few big bills looming)
