trailer break: ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’

Would a psychiatric hospital really put kids in with adults? That seems like a really bad idea.

Actually, though, it looks like a week in a mental institution would be a really fun and relaxing way to learn about yourself and find true love. Maybe I should give it a try…

It’s Kind of a Funny Story opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 8; no Canadian or U.K. release dates have been announced.

I HATE these movies that depict mental illness/depression as something that can be cured by meeting someone nice and learning how to *live* your life. It’s obvious that the people who write this kind of stories don’t have the faintest idea what is like to be depressed or suffering from some other form of mental illness…and just how difficult and heart-wrenching it is to successfully pull through or just manage to get by on a regular basis…

Also …look …it’s just another film about a boy sorting out his life ..with the help of a wise bro and a hot chick….

SaintAndy, I generally agree with what you said in your post. However, this movie is based off a novel of the same name by a young writer named Ned Vizzini, who actually WAS hospitalized for severe depression for a brief period of time. The book/movie draws directly from his experiences (although the romance was fictional).

@SaintAndy – And have you seen the film? Maybe no one is “cured” or whatever. Plus even though the main character is the guy it seems, who’s to say that the “wise bro” and the “hot chick” also won’t be using him to sort out their lives?

Emma Roberts is 19 and Keir Gilchrist is 18. OK, they wouldn’t count as adults in the USA, but in most other places they would. I’m guessing the characters are meant to be just-barely-21.

While this trailer doesn’t make me want to see the film, the way Machete’s did, it does at least not make me want to avoid any mention of it (the way The Virginity Hit’s did). This just might be something complex and good, hidden behind a “happy people in the loony bin” trailer.

Sure they would, as long as you twist your brain into the right kind of knot where it makes sense that you could be an adult, and be able to enter contracts, vote, screw other adults, and volunteer to die in a war, but not get drunk. :)

No, I haven’t seen the film, but that doesn’t mean I can’t comment on some of its general aspects based on its trailer.
Since this is based on a novel, I supposed it makes sense that the main character is a guy …but my point still stands ..that we seem to be getting stories about a variety of men …of various ages ..working through some difficulties, usually finding balance/redemption with the help of some sympathetic (and obligatory hot) lady ..and rarely do we get the same stories with a woman as a central character.
