I am going to London
A few days ago I tweeted that it was the last day to vote for me in the British Airways Face of Opportunity contest, among the prizes for which is airfare to London (as well as networking opportunities and other businessy things). Turns out that was merely the last day to enter the contest: you can still vote for my entry through this coming Friday, November 19. Read my entry and vote here. You can vote once per day.
There will be up to 250 winners, and your votes will ensure that I move into the next round, which will narrow the entrants down to 400. So the odds of winning are not astronomical. If I’m one of the winners, I’ll fly off to London (along with all the other winners) in early February.
But here’s the thing: If I don’t win, I’m still going to London — in that case, in mid January. And however I get to London, I don’t know when or even if I’m coming back to New York.
I’ve been hinting that lots of things in my life, both personally and professionally, have not been going in directions I’d like. And I’ve been feeling for a long while that I needed to shake everything up in a big way in order to fix that. So I’m giving up my apartment in New York, selling or throwing out most of my crap, putting into storage the few things I truly treasure, and getting on a plane with my laptop and some clothes and not much else.
FlickFilosopher.com is not going anywhere, of course. I will continue to review movies, TV, and DVDs, and be a general voice of cranky discontent and geeky joy about pop culture. Many big films open on the same day now on both sides of the Atlantic, so I’ll still be able to review many films on the same schedule from London as I could from New York. The mix of smaller films I’ll have access to will change somewhat, but the vast majority of you aren’t able to see anything other than the biggest releases till they’re on DVD anyway.
Perhaps I’ll focus more on older films that we all have access to on DVD — that’s something I’ve been wanting to implement as a regular thing for a long while now. Perhaps I’ll have more time to focus on Doctor Who blogging, which I find keeps sliding away from me (not to mention Life on Mars, plus other shows I’d like to devote similar coverage to). Some things may shift in the mix here, but that would be happening anyway, even if I stayed in New York, because I’m still trying to figure out how to make this all work in a way that can support me. When I look around the Net and see other sites not terribly different from this one doing much better, it’s clear that I’m doing something wrong and need to fix it.
All this will get worked out on the fly, I imagine, though there’s plenty of time to talk about it before I change locales.
Of course you’ll also see me writing about the experience of shifting my perspective on film so dramatically, and perhaps even just the general experience of moving to and discovering a new city and living in a new country.
So, this is just the beginning of my little odyssey. I’ll be posting more about it over the upcoming weeks.
