a moment of truth for FlickFilosopher.com
This summer, FlickFilosopher.com will celebrate its 14th anniversary. For at least the last eight years, the work on this site has been more than a full-time job for me — that is, I’ve put in more than 40 hours per week creating content for this site and doing all the other administrative, support, and technical work required for a popular site such as this one. For the past year, it’s been even more intensive than that, as I have devoted myself entirely to the site and the promotion of it.
All that work has paid off in many ways. Traffic is up. My reputation as a critic and writer continues to grow. The community of readers here has gotten larger without degenerating into unreadable trollfests: the conversation just keeps getting smarter and more intriguing.
Unfortunately, one way that all my work has not paid off is financially.
As I mentioned last week, the future of FlickFilosopher.com is at stake. I cannot continue to devote all my time and energy to a site that does not pay me a living. I mean, I literally cannot. I’m on the verge of destitution. That’s not your problem, of course… unless you want FlickFilosopher.com to continue.
I have to make a living. Like now. I hope this site can provide it. I would be very happy indeed if I could do nothing all day but filter movies, TV, media, and pop culture through my own peculiar mindset and write about it for your amusement. But I cannot do it for free anymore. If the site cannot provide me with a living, I will have to find something else that will.
I hate how harsh that sounds, and I apologize for it. But I do need you know how desperate the situation is.
It should, theoretically, be possible for FlickFilosopher.com to bring in plenty of money. There are enough regular readers of this site that if all of you subscribed for just $1 per month, everything would be fine.
That is to say: If you read this site on a regular basis. I need you to become a subscriber. Click here for all sorts of subscription options.
There’s just no getting around this anymore: the only way FlickFilosopher.com will be able to endure is with the support of readers.
And if it turns out that there aren’t enough readers willing or able to support the site, then that’s an answer, too. It will mean the time has come to stop banging my head against the wall and give it up.
Please believe that I do not want to do that. Nothing would break my heart more than to have to shut down the site. But I have to be realistic. I have to be able to take care of myself. I would love to live in the fantasy world where money was no object, but I don’t live there.
Over the next days and weeks, I’ll be posting a lot about the realities of what it takes to run a site like this and the reasons why you should support it. (See this first post about why advertising does not work online.)
I’d also like to thank those readers who are already subscribers. Your support has been crucial in making me believe that there must be more readers like you out there.
