artisanal film reviews | by maryann johanson

question of the day: What’s the next “bad” or “horrible” high-concept comedy?

We’ve had Bad Teacher. Today Horrible Bosses opens in North America. (Watch the trailer here; I’ll see the film next week and will report asap afterward, assuming there’s no embargo before the July 22 U.K. opening.) The first is doing well at the box office and the second is getting strong reviews. So we’ll be getting more of these movies.
Developing the concept is a snap: Just take a negative adjective and attach it to an ordinary job. The jokes are half written already if you choose a job that already has negative connotations, or if the job is supposed to be a supportive and helpful one:

Unpleasant Sanitation Worker
Irritating Bus Driver
Terrible Therapist
Awful Waitress
Dreadful Bartender

What’s the next “bad” or “horrible” high-concept comedy?

Try it, it’s fun! For bonus point, cast an actor in the lead. I nominate Viola Davis as Terrible Therapist: I bet she’d be hilarious.
