question of the day: Does posing nude in ‘Playboy’ have any upsides for Lindsay Lohan?

Lindsay Lohan

It’s the new rockbottom. After arrests for DUI and drug possession, stints in rehab, stretches in jail and community service, Lindsay Lohan has decided to take $1 million to pose nude for Playboy magazine. As train wrecks of careers go, Lohan’s has perhaps been one of the most heartbreaking of recent years: we’ve watched her morph almost overnight from an engaging screen presence as a teenager to the apparently willing purveyor of her own disaster of a personal life as a young woman. She likely could have had made the transition from child star to grownup one. For some reason, she decided to throw it away.

It’s all really terribly sad, and the public response to Lohan’s latest misadventure has been predictably lurid. Comments on the TMZ post that broke the “news” of Lohan’s Playboy appearance are full of bodysnarking and concerns from rubbernecking boys that Lohan’s appearnace will fail to provide suitable jerkoff material for them.
I’m not sure this is any less demeaning than Lohan’s other recent work, scrubbing toilets the Los Angeles County morgue as part of her court-ordered community service. At least something is clean at the end of the day.

Does posing nude in Playboy have any upsides for Lindsay Lohan?

I won’t go into all my many, many feminist problems with Playboy. It’s undeniable that in our culture today, when fame is its own reward and a woman can get very rich doing little else but stripping off, posing nude can help a woman’s career, if money and infamy are all she desires. But only as a launching-off point. Sex tapes and other such sordidness are seen as the beginning of a career of reality shows, lingerie lines, public romances with other D-list stars, and so on. This sort of thing is not what one does at the point Lohan is at.

Can this Playboy move possibly help Lohan? What does it say about the state of fame that she would even consider it?
