how much coverage of SOPA have you seen in the mainstream American media?
bronxbee emailed me today to say, about the SOPA Web strike:
it’s really amazing how little news media coverage there is about this event. the NYTimes does have a front page article about it, but Yahoo News has nothing, and is still up and running, even though their so-called “news” is heavily dependent upon culling articles from other sites and news organizations…
Color me totally unsurprised.
Have you noticed TV news networks are largely quiet on SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) during prime-time viewing hours? You’re not alone.
Media watchdog Media Matters found that most major TV news networks haven’t been giving SOPA prime-time coverage in any substantial terms. In a recently released report, the research organization discovered that “most major television news outlets — MSNBC, Fox News, ABC, CBS, and NBC — have ignored the bill during their evening broadcasts.”
I’ve been meaning to post this infographic — from Frugal Dad via OWNI.eu — for a while, and now’s the perfect opportunity:

Key takeaway: the corporations whose lobbyists are responsible for SOPA and PROTECT IP are the same corporations who run the mainstream news media. It is not in their best interest to tell you about all the things happening that will affect you.
