question of the day: Whither the American art film?
Reader Julian wants to know:
Whither the American art film?
I will leave you to interpret that yourself. Has there ever been a genre of “American art film”? If not, why not? If so, where has it gone? Or maybe you think it still exist: If so, is it doing well? Is it struggling? What are some examples of the “American art film”? Can art and commerce sit comfortable next to each other in Hollywood?
If you need someplace to start, check out the piece by Owen Gleiberman in EW, dating from early 2011, entitled “‘Blue Valentine’ and ‘Somewhere’: The return of the American art film — and, yes, that’s a good thing.”
