• They’ll probably get Ian McKellen to play Tolkien, and that’ll make things weird. “JRR Tolkien film biopic in the pipeline” [BBC News]
• Smart observation: “What Really Makes Katniss Stand Out? Peeta, Her Movie Girlfriend” [NPR: monkey see]
Hmm, I can’t see the Tolkien estate being happy about this. They really want creative control, and they’re never going to get it.
It’s a little depressing that one gender role that goes beyond the stereotypes is still so rare and interesting. But hey, it’s a start.
The comment about Ian McKellen gives me a weird thought. What if, when it’s time to cast the 13th Doctor, they give the job to Patrick Stewart? If the Doctor were also Captain Picard and Professor Xavier, fans’ heads would explode.
That NPR article is spot-on.
