London is safe from Godzilla (for now)

I just noticed that the marquee image that was up in the Odeon Leicester Square the other day for the London premiere of Godzilla — as seen in Monday’s photo of the day — shows the King of All Monsters stomping around London. A closeup:

Ha ha. Except London doesn’t appear in the film at all. Honolulu and San Francisco are the two major metropolises that take a beating in the new film. Still, there’s always the sequel…

Heh. I wonder if the Egyptian marketing for the film shows Godzilla stomping on the pyramids.

Maybe the DVD will include deleted scenes of Godzilla trampling on EVERY MAJOR CITY IN THE WORLD.

Apparently some French guy wished really hard…

At least they’re not localising the CGI in the theatrical release. But I’m sure it’ll come.

  • That’s actually an intriguing idea. It *could* be done. And I bet it will be eventually.

If you live in New York, the CGI is pre-localized. I saw the new Spider-Man movie in Times Square, and I got through the more boring parts by trying to figure out how far down the street Spidey was fighting Electro.

I seem to remember that Planes swapped out the texture and voice actor on one of the minor characters. I’m sure that one could put together multiple CGI cities (and if you’ve seen any of the Stargate Studios demo reels, you could do that for backdrops for the actors too). The only question is whether it would be worth the extra filming cost.

Godzilla vs. the Kremlin! Now who doesn’t want to see that? Apart from the Russians, of course.

Of course, the only reason he has not done so already is on account of those damned scientists…

I just remembered that, in one of the trailers for Godzilla, there’s a shot of a damaged Statue of Liberty with a missing arm. But New York doesn’t figure into the film at all. Localized CGI marketing, or just a deleted scene?

  • That’s the fake Statue in Vegas, which does take a minor beating.

  • Bluejay

Ah, okay. Still, I don’t recall that shot being in the film. It’s annoying when trailers show you stuff that winds up not being used.

  • No, it might not be in the film. But it is clearly Vegas in the trailer, and that’s not misleading.

I am a bit surprised that no British horror movie buffs have mentioned Gorgo, Britain’s most famous entry in the Giant Movie Monster Sweepstakes.

Then again I didn’t remember it until I saw it mentioned on another site just a few days ago…
