“These could be yours. You will literally own women if you win our contest. What, you’re not interested in women? Pshaw, everyone is interested in women! Haven’t you ever heard of the male gaze?”

  • RogerBW

“If you don’t want ’em yourself because you’re some kind of weirdo, you can always trade them in for other valuable prizes.”

  • Nathan

“We literally have a shipping container out back, guess what, they’re the female contestants from last year. How are we getting away with this? We hired them on as ‘interns.'” 0_o

“And you’ve won… A NEW WOMAN!” *woman rolls in while fanfare plays*

I’m digging these Facebook posts (as someone who’s not on FB I’d never see them otherwise).

Fascinating – and by that I mean depressing – that the automatic expectation and assumption is that it will be men making the short films for entry to this competition, entrenched bias all the way down to the grassroots. :-/

  • LaSargenta

All I want to know is: Did Short List respond to the twitters?

  • *Straight* men, of course.

  • They don’t appear to have. They don’t seem to reply to any tweets.

  • RogerBW

Or lesbians, I suppose. But somehow I doubt they thought of that.

  • bronxbee

what this literally says to me is, “no women need bothering to enter their films. or make any. ever.”

  • Of course not. (And just because the male gaze might also, as an accidental byproduct, please lesbians doesn’t mean it’s not a problem.)

  • A decent woman is too busy making sandwiches and babies to have time for filmmaking.

  • LaSargenta

    Oh. Really?

  • LaSargenta

  • You and I are not decent women.

  • LaSargenta

    That’s true!

  • leah

Yes, straight men, of course, important qualifier.

In fairness, being attractive to women is a significant motivating factor in a lot of decisions that men make and that prob holds true for lesbians as well.

  • Danielm80

And no female filmmaker wants to date a famous man with a fortune?

(I think I accidentally wrote a tongue twister.)

  • leah

In fairness? I guess I’m not seeing what your comment has to do with “fairness”, rather missing the point that the sign’s flippant stated goal of getting a woman for film-makers is not in any way inclusive of all would-be film-makers but clearly specifically targeted at straight men, the ‘assumed’ demographic – ignorant and sexist, yes, “fair” how? (I mean are you seriously suggesting that the makers of this sign also intended to appeal to lesbians? For real?)

  • And why does that mean that women should be excluded from an invitation to enter a filmmaking contest?

  • Nathan

My mother defied this stereotype by filming practically my entire childhood…
