Darn, I thought the hurricane was named “Joachim.”
The next one of course, would be “Khan.” “I will avenge you!”
I find it a bit funny that although I have a great many Hispanic relatives and I live in a state with a large Hispanic population, I don’t run into a lot of people named Joaquin.
Indeed, apart from Mr. Phoenix, the main item that came to mind when I heard that name was “Yo Soy Joaquin (I Am Joaquin)” — an old poem that once appeared in an anthology of Chicano literature. Indeed, I thought of that poem long before I thought of Mr. Phoenix even though it is not the type of poem that is commonly referenced in American pop culture.
Yet more proof, I guess, that we need more diversity in the online critic community. ;-)
