As this video points out, our culture was already backtracking on the gender-equality gains of the 1970s by the time the idea that videogames are for boys came along. The gaming industry was only following the cultural pendulum swinging back in the other direction.
Whoops! I missed this when you posted it…fortunately, since it IS so good, I came across it elsewhere.
It just baffles me that such practices still exist in today’s “AAA” market. Why alienate 50% of your consumer population? Where are the women indeed.
Actually, it’s more like 60%. Some of us guys play as female characters because we like narratives that we aren’t intimately familiar with. And we can’t take games seriously that make a joke out of their female characters by oversexualizing them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy-FhExTY9M
