“A young Civil War veteran who disguised herself as a man during the fighting wakes up to find her husband kidnapped by ruthless bandits” would at least be a bit of a change… but even when women are allowed to fight, they are portrayed as non-fighters who are brought to it by a Big Event, not people who have got there by their own choice.
Hmm. Set the movie in the modern day. Make her a Civil War reenactor, dressed in a soldier’s uniform, who still has to face sexism more than a century after the war. Replace the bandits with loopy, overzealous reenactors who think the kidnapping is a wild prank. Then it might be an interesting story—as long as the woman is the main character.
