I’m assuming—or praying—the gaffe was a joke. I took it as a historical allusion:

Yeah, the LRB has a good sense of humour.
(Much prose fiction clearly isn’t proof-read in a traditional manner any more: if it passes the spell-check, it gets published.)
I hope so. But as I noted in the Facebook comments of this post, the fact that we cannot really be sure is an indication that rampant grammar abuse is a problem.
