Some people grew up with damsels in distress as their media model of how women worked; some people grew up with Emma Peel and Ellen Ripley.
Peel and Ripley were rare exceptions in a media environment full of damsels. And you certainly don’t even need those few exceptions to know that there is something seriously wrong with women only ever being damsels.
Sure. They just were the ones that made it plain to me that there was no reason all the other portrayals of women should be so dull.
(But then I know men who genuinely prefer, as partners, women who are incompetent at anything except looking pretty. I find them creepy in the extreme.)
