See, this is what happens when you don’t let your delegates carry guns!
A Game of Groans, A Storm of Boars.
I dunno, it was cute, but I’m really unclear what the point was? For the RNC, I mean. (Colbert’s just trying to tell some jokes.)
The point is: Colbert’s show isn’t doing as well as people expected, and other late-night hosts have had success with bits that went “viral,” so he’s probably under pressure to come up with big stunts that get people’s attention.
That’s fine, but what I mean is: what was the RNC’s point in having/letting Colbert do this bit? Did Republicans (and those leaning Republican) really find it funny? And why are Democrats (and those leaning Democrat) buying the framing that Cobert “hijack[ed] the RNC stage” in what was clearly a staged bit.
This is being marketed as the only convention in decades that people actually want to watch, but other than the Trumps, and maybe Christie, there aren’t many attention-getting speakers (I mean, Scott Baio?). If viewers get the impression that something surprising could happen at any moment, maybe they’ll keep the TV on.

Because they think it makes liberals look stupid?
