Yeah Right! (review)

Mind-bending director Spike Jonze -- of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation fame -- returns to his skate roots with this feature-length montage of exciting street skateboarding, shot in music video-size chunks with codirectors Cory Weincheque and Ty Evans. None but the most devoted fans of the sport will be able to sit through the entire disc in one shot; most viewers will find it repetitious. But dipping into the disc here and there can be rewarding. An unparalled kind of sports photography -- the cameramen are skateboard-mounted -- showcases the dramatic athleticism of the skaters as members of Girl Skateboard Team (none of whom are female) and the Chocolate Skateboard Team, plus a celebrity appearance by actor Owen Wilson, attempt -- and usually pull off -- amazing stunts, seeming to fly through the air weightlessly. Cool extras for aficionadoes: outtakes, more interviews with the skaters, and alternate edits.
