TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 02.27-03.05
I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.
(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)
MONDAY 02.27
2:30pm: Koyaanisqatsi. Freaky cool movie about life, the universe, and everything.
2:50am: The Thing. John Carpenter does the 1950s original one better. Plus, Kurt Russell is always babe-a-licious.
TUESDAY 02.28
8:00pm: The Conversation. Not quite SF, but a stunning movie about the impact of technology on the soul. And Hackman? He’s good in everything.
10:00pm: American Graffiti. George Lucas’s masterpiece. No, seriously.
7:00pm: Army of Darkness, Alien Apocalypse, and The Man with the Screaming Brain. Hit the Bruce Campbell trifecta. (Warning: the non-Sam Raimi movies really kinda suck, but hey: it’s Bruce.)
THURSDAY 03.02
3:00am: Darkman. Speaking of Sam Raimi, here’s he is with maybe the best comic book movie not actually based on a comic book.
4:15am: Mighty Joe Young. The 1949, of course. WWOR 9 in NYC used to show this everything Thanksgiving Day, so it always makes me think of turkey and stuffing.
FRIDAY 03.03
3:55am: Ju-On. J-horror, and just the kind of movie to watch in the dead of night.
12:00n: Bell, Book and Candle. Burn ‘er, she’s a witch!
SATURDAY 03.04
8:00pm: Heathers. I loved my dead gay son!
6:00pm: Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. Embrace your nuclear doom.
1:15am: The Third Man. Not strictly a geek film, but a powerful influence on genre flicks for decades after.
9:00am onward: Carnosaur, Carnosaur 2, Carnosaur 3: Primal Species, Raptor Island, Raptor, Curse of the Komodo, Anonymous Rex, and Godzilla Vs. Gigan. Pretty much dino mayhem all day.
SUNDAY 03.05
1:15am: Westworld. It was after the robot holocaust...
3:00am: Soylent Green. I miss Phil Hartman. *sniffle*
