TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 04.17-04.23

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

MONDAY 04.17

11:00PM: Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. Miniseries Month continues with four glorious hours of John, Aeryn, and all the old gang.

TUESDAY 04.18

11:00PM: Frank Herbert’s Dune. More coherent than -- and three times as long as -- Lynch’s insanely truncated movie, and yet somehow less insanely intriguing too.

WEDNESDAY 04.19

4:30PM: The Haunting. Not the dreadful remake but the 1963 original, starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, and Russ Tamblyn.

FRIDAY 04.21

8:00PM: Clash of the Titans. One of the movies that made me the geek I am today -- I think I watched this about 100 times in 1984 or so. Still lovin’ the robot owl...

12:00AM: Charly. Don’t pull a Charly Gordon and miss this, one of the greatest SF movies ever made (even if lots of people don’t think of it as SF).

SATURDAY 04.22

2:00PM: Invasion of the Body Snatchers. 1956, of course. I always imagine that if Charlton Heston were in this, he’d run down the street yelling, “Pod people are made of Communists!”

3:30PM: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Awesome Harryhausen stop-motion FX.

Someone just told me about "The Quiet Earth" and it's pending release to DVD in June. I've never seen it before, but I'm psyched.
