TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 06.26-07.02

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

MONDAY 06.26

4:00AM: The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He is not an animal! Oh, wait, that’s a different movie...

WEDNESDAY 06.28

10:00PM: Lawrence of Arabia. Swashbuckling goes real life. One of the best movies ever made, and its hero is a geek. A political and cultural geek, but a geek nevertheless.

12:30AM: Topsy-Turvy. Theater geeks put on the original production of The Mikado.

THURSDAY 06.29

8:00PM: The Sea Hawk. Get ready for Pirates of the Caribbean 2 with this 1940 Errol Flynn adventure that was a huge influence on it.

FRIDAY 06.30

4:00PM: Monkey Business. Wacky mad-scientist comedy from director Howard Hawks and stars Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, and Marilyn Monroe.

SATURDAY 07.01

4:00PM: The Adventures of Robon Hood. Awesome Errol Flynn adventure. And Claude Rains’s evil Prince John is a hilarious dead ringer for Christopher Guest in The Princess Bride.

10:00PM: Wild at Heart. David Lynch. Weird.

1:00PM: Army of Darkness. Klaatu! Barada! Nicmumble...

7:00PM: Mansquito. Best. Bad Movie Title. Ever.

SUNDAY 07.02

9:05AM: In This World. Michael Winterbottom’s faux documentary tracks the ordeal of illegal immigrants smuggled into Europe. It ain’t science fiction, but it has the creepy, edgy feel of it.

12:00m: H. Apparently it’s Korea’s Silence of the Lambs.

All FREAKIN’ DAY: The Twilight Zone marathon. Okay, it’s not a movie, but it is a geek’s dream.
