new experiment: open thread

Here's something to keep you guys busy while I catch up on some offline stuff: an open thread. Use it to chat amongst yourselves (but try to keep it relatively movieish), ask me questions, whatever.

And of course I have much to catch up on online, too: Coming up this week, I'll review, naturally, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and A Scanner Darkly but also indies The Great New Wonderful, Strangers with Candy, The Road to Guantanamo, Wordplay, and more. I'll also finally get some thoughts down on The Lake House and reveal the winner of my Lake House giveaway. And I've got a ton of new giveaways to post, too.

FIRST!

Maybe that's cool over at Eschaton, where a hundred people post to an open thread within the first ten seconds it's open, but clearly, here, where it took about 20 *hours* for the first comment to get posted, it's kinda pathetic. :->

I don't have a lot to add, other than I have always found it a bit baffling that the Flick Filosopher site doesn't draw more comments. I get the impression that people do read this site, so it can't be that. I know for a while that comments were only open to micropatrons, but now it's open to everyone.

Maybe it's something as simple as, "You go." "No YOU go first." "I'll go right after you." You know, people are afraid to go to a party if they think they are going to be the only ones who showed up. Maybe it just needs time for a "community" to build.

The site is averaging around 4000 visitors a day, which is pretty respectable, and on days around when big movies are opening (like last Thursday, as *Superman* and *Prada* were opening) it can spike above 10,000. So yes, people are reading the site. But I do think there is a big difference between those who want to pop in to read a review and those looking for a community.

But commenting is picking up. I'm trying to post more regularly, and with posts beyond just reviews (like the new news tidbits, which I hope to get to every weekday), so perhaps that will inspire more commenters.

Ms Johanson, now that you have watched both the movies, do you think Bryan Singer was right in dumping X Men 3 for Superman Returns?
In other words, was Superman Returns worth what X Men 3 could have been? (Atleast to you, as a viewer)

If it'd been my decision, I woulda told Singer to do *Superman* and then come back to do another *X-Men* movie -- No. 3 could have waited another year.

who I am

I'm MaryAnn Johanson: writer and ponderer in New York City who drinks too much wine and thinks way too much about such inconsequences as movies, TV, books, and the meaning of life.
