TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 07.03-07.09

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

MONDAY 07.03

We’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz, all night:

8:00PM: The Wizard of Oz. The definitive 1939 classic.
10:00PM: The Wiz. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor.
12:30AM: The Wizard of Oz. 1925 silent
1:45AM: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. 1910(!) silent.

11:00PM: Darwin’s Nightmare. Science-fiction-except-it’s-not doc about how futzing with the environment is not always a good thing.

all day: The Twilight Zone marathon. Woo-hoo!

TUESDAY 07.04

7:15AM: Tom Thumb. Six-inch-small boy. What sin could a lad commit in a single lifetime, et cetera... George Pal directs.

2:30PM: Time Bandits. Terry Gilliam’s awesome romp through history.

all day: The Twilight Zone marathon. Woo-hoo!

THURSDAY 07.06

8:00PM: Lassie Come Home. Freakishly smart dog does amazing things. Stars Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor.

9:00PM: Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Mmm, mashed potatoes...

FRIDAY 07.07

12:00m: The Manchurian Candidate. Laurence Harvey is brainwashed -- by science!

12:00m: Dune. The spice! David Lynch’s weirdest film?

3:00AM: Escape From L.A. Snake Plissen is back, and he’s still freakin’ pissed.

SATURDAY 07.08

4:00PM: Mysterious Island. “Escaped Civil War POWs end up on an island populated by giant animals.” You can’t make this stuff up. From 1961.

SUNDAY 07.09

2:00PM: The Nutty Professor. 1963 goofball flick in which Dr. Jerry Lewis experiments on himself.

8:00PM: Heaven Can Wait. Warren Beatty is an angel. And a football player. And a floor wax. And a dessert topping.
