TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 07.10-07.16

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

WEDNESDAY 07.12

Remember how after Raiders of the Lost Ark we got stuff like Tales from the Gold Monkey and Bring ‘Em Back Alive? They were all inspired as much by legendary big-game hunter Frank Buck and his 1930s adventure nature documentaries as they were by the fictional serials of the time. Check out two of them today:

1:30PM: Wild Cargo. From 1934; Buck does Malaya.

3:15PM: Fang and Claw. From 1935; Buck’s in the Far East again, hunting rare and deadly animals.

3:00AM: Gremlins. Don’t get them wet. Don’t feed them after midnight. Etc.

THURSDAY 07.13

7:30PM: In This World. Michael Winterbottom’s faux documentary about illegal immigration isn’t actually science fiction, but it has the same edgy, 20-minutes-into-the future feel of 70s dystopic future fantasy.

FRIDAY 07.14

10:00PM: American Graffiti. Geeky for the George Lucas connection, and also for an early appearance by Harrison Ford.

SUNDAY 07.16

12:00n: Forever Darling. Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and James Mason(!) do guardian-angel fantasy/comedy schtick in this 1956 flick.
