TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 08.21-08.27

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

MONDAY 08.21

8:00PM: The Bishop’s Wife. 1947 fantasy with an angel and Cary Grant. What more could you need?

WEDNESDAY 08.23

6:00AM: Madame Curie. This 1943 biopic stars Greer Garson as perhaps the first female geek.

12:15AM: The Purple Rose of Cairo. One of the coolest fantasies ever made about Hollywood and the movies.

1:45AM: Brigadoon. Classic flick about a magical village.

3:45AM: A Guy Named Joe. More angel stuff from 1943 with Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne.

THURSDAY 08.24

11:00PM: Jolly Roger: Massacre at Cutter’s Cove. I dunno what it is, but I love the title, and I bet it’s a supercheesy slasher ripoff of Pirates of the Caribbean.

FRIDAY 08.25

2:15AM: Bell, Book and Candle. Witchcraft!

SATURDAY 08.26

8:00PM: Gunga Din. Awesome 1939 adventure with treasure and Cary Grant (*sigh*) and cool stuff like that.

4:30AM: Every Girl Should Be Married. Geek gal uses science to snag a husband, though why she would want one remains a mystery... except -- oh! -- he’s Cary Grant. From 1949.

3:15AM: Audition. Aw, man, this is one of those really horrific J-horrors, from Takashi Miike.

SUNDAY 08.27

10:15PM: Hatari! Howard Hawks’ 1962 adventure flick was a big influence on the Jurassic Park movies.
