TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 08.28-09.03

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

TUESDAY 08.29

2:15PM Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde. Awesome 1941 version starring Spencer Tracey, Ingrid Bergman, and Lana Turner, and directed by Victor Fleming.

4:15PM Gaslight. Perhaps the classic of psychological horror -- it needs nothing supernatural to spook you.

FRIDAY 09.01

9:30PM: The Incredible Shrinking Man. I’m melting! No, wait, that was a different flick.

11:00PM: It Came From Outer Space And it’s up to no good.

SATURDAY 09.02

12:00n: Hercules, Samson & Ulysses. It’s just like those episodes of the Kevin Sorbo show, only not.

1:30PM: The Invisible Boy. A boy's robot playmate is taken over by aliens. What’s not to love?

9:00AM: Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Send lawyers, guns, and money.

SUNDAY 09.03

12:00m: Ju-on: The Grudge. Takashi Shimizu’s original is much better, of course, than the American remake starring Sarah Michelle Geller.

It’s SciFi’s First Annual “Is It Crap, or Ain’t It?” Movie Marathon!

9:30AM: Mission to Mars
12:00n: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
3:00PM: Dante’s Peak
5:00PM: The Abyss
9:00PM: End of Days
