TiVo this! can't-miss geek movies on TV, 09.18-09.24

I scour the skeds so you don’t have to, and point out the best geek highlights of the week in some unexpected places: Turner Classic Movies and The Sundance Channel, which show films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there’s nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review.)

TUESDAY 09.19

12:30AM: Ju-on. Takashi Shimizu’s atmospheric horror flick is way better than his own Hollywood remake.

THURSDAY 09.21

4:30PM: It’s All About Love. Joaquin Phoenix and Claire Danes star in this intriguing 2003 under-the-radar SF flick about love in the near future.

SATURDAY 09.23

10:00AM: The Clairvoyant. 1935 flick about a fake psychic who turns into the genuine thing. Stars Claude Rains and Fay Wray.

10:00PM: Dazed and Confused. Richard Linklater’s flick may be the first film to explore Gen X slackerdom.

SUNDAY 09.24

6:00PM: The Manchurian Candidate. The 1962 original. Political SF from the era before real politics started imitating Orwell.

6:30PM: Timeline. So bad it’s good. Starring Paul Walker, naturally.

6:00PM: Back to the Future. Great Scott!
