Guyver: Days of Future Past 1 (review)

This is either one of those things that, apparently, if you get it, you love it, but if you don’t get it, you really don’t get it. I don’t get it. This is a new rendition of the “classic” Japanese anime, just your ordinary tale about a teenage boy and the suit of high-tech body armor he accidentally steals from the sinister and mysterious organization that secretly runs the world. There’s aliens and weird creatures and cartoon mayhem of all sorts, but that’s all there is, unless you count flat characters, awkwardly on-the-nose dialogue, and zero subtext -- this is the kind of stuff that makes nonfans believe that anime is nothing but bald-faced adolescent power fantasies. Strictly for anime geeks, who apparently will put up with getting only four episodes (out of 26 in the entire series; Volumes 2 through 7 are yet to come) for 30 bucks and will accept a printed insert full of sketches and interviews as a “bonus feature.” The booklet is nicely printed, I’ll concede, and it is in full color.
