Goodnight, We Love You (review)

Phyllis Diller, she of the outrageous wigs and self-deprecating humor, recently retired from the rigors of touring her stand-up show, and documentary filmmaker Gregg Barson was there for her last show. You will not be surprised to learn that Diller has hidden depths at odds with her comedy routine -- she’s actually a gourmet chef, not the culinary disaster she pretends to be onstage -- or that she’s a consummate professional, attuned to every technical detail of her show. Interviews with her son and former assistants and tributes from comics who’ve been inspired by Diller paint a loving, respectful, entirely banal portrait that’s more like a greeting card than anything else. Diller’s fans will enjoy it, of course, as well as the entirety of that last concert appearance, one of the disc’s bonus features. [buy at Amazon]
