Thunderpants (review)

Oh, dear. It’s an entire movie about farts. That it isn’t totally unbearable to those over the age of eight is a miracle. Patrick (Bruce Cook: Nicholas Nickleby) can’t stop breaking wind... ever, which rather limits his grade-school friendships until he meets Alan (Rupert Grint, aka Harry Potter’s Ron Weasley), who lacks a sense of smell but makes up for his with a genius that can transforms Patrick’s, er, handicap into a gift. I won’t spoil it for you, so let’s just say that if you’ve ever dreamed of being an astronaut but were afraid you couldn’t make the cut, well: talk to Patrick and Alan. Cowriter/director Pete Hewitt (The Borrowers) brings some wit to the visuals -- this, ahem, cheeky tale exists in a pseudo-60s realm of funky design and off-kilter colors -- and I got a laugh out of Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water) as a mysterious government agent.
