10-year celebration Sat Sep 08 07, 8:56AM

happy birthday to me: FlickFilosopher.com is 10 years old today

Today’s the day: on September 8, 1997, I posted my first movie review on the Internet. The first post in my 10-year celebration, which I started a year ago today, has some history of the site, if you’re interested.

(more below the ad... scroll down...)

I spent the last year migrating reviews from the old design into the blog format, which is important not just to maintain a cohesive look at the site but also to get all the content into a database -- that will make future upgrades to whatever the next hot thing in Net design is. But I did have someone email me recently who was annoyed that I had “disabled the Back button” and so must be very ashamed of my work if I don’t want people to be able to surf back to a previous back on the site. Of course, I have not disabled anything: all those old-design pages now have redirects on them bouncing surfers to the new blog pages, and so hitting the Back button merely moves you back to the redirect page... which immediately bounces you forward again. I realize that’s a bit inconvenient, but with thousands of pages and countless links to the old pages around the Net, there’s no way I could NOT redirect. And there’s an easy-to-use nav bar at the top of all the blog pages, so it should still be easy to find what you need. (And of course you can always use your browser’s history to navigate back if you need to.)

I’m starting the process of putting together a book of my favorite reviews, which I hope to have ready very soon -- November, maybe. And I’d like to include a Readers’ Choice. So here’s what I’d like you to do. Send me an email with one choice for your favorite review of mine, anything published up till today. Everyone who sends in a vote -- ONE vote only -- will be entered into a drawing to receive one of five free copies of the book. This has nothing to do with my other contests in which I give away movie crap, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve won before or anything. The only rule is: ONE vote per person, and get your vote in by October 1.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

(They grow up so fast…)

Happy birthday!

A 10-year anniversary, that's very impressive in Web terms. Congratulations, MaryAnn. Many happy returns of the day!

You're my favorite writer I disagree the most with ;)

Here's to the next 10!

Well done! And well doing...keep up the good work and the rabble rousing! You're my most-quoted film critic (well, you and the Filthy Critic).

...and many more.

Happy Birthday, and thank you for your entertaining, enthusiastic and sane reviews. It's so refreshing to read a critic who clearly genuinely enjoys a movie that's just good entertainment!

Sometimes your reviews get my blood boiling (JP3 for instance) but i still keep coming back here.

I knew i liked your reviews when i actually caught myself thinking "What does Maryanne think of this flick?"

That alone means you deserve another decade in my book.

Happy Birthday to one of my favorite websites!

Happy birthay, I do really enjoy reading your reviews.

Here's a link (legal), you may find nice: a studio ghibli movie about cats... it's on-line... just give it a little try b'cause it's in japanese...

Thanks, everyone

I think 10 years online is like 187 in dog years. Or something.

10 Years a very great Website at Internet! Happy Brithday from Germany!

congratulations for 10 years online - on the next 10 years - greetings

Congrats, M-A. You've made a habit out of strong and admirable contributions to cinematic discourse, and remind the rest of us that the internet is still a place where real talent can flourish. Here's hoping that the next ten years are as good as the first!

10 years, huh? I've known of you for about 5 of those, and only because a guy on a video game board mentioned your site. I've been hooked ever since. I too, find myself thinking what Mary Ann would have to say about whatever random movie I'm watching. I tend to read your reviews twice. Once before, and once after. It's gonna be tough to pick out my favorite. Atheist that I am, though, I think I have it narrowed down. Keep up the great work, and I'll keep reading it.

Congratulations, MaryAnn. You've been my favorite movie reviewer for quite a while now.

Congratulations and Happy Birthday :-)

Happy Birthday and thank you for this great Website.

Happy birthday to you, MaryAnn. May you live one hundred years. May you live one hundred years...

Happy Birthday for 10 years online *wow*

I know, it's crazy, right. I must be demented.

"Happy birthday to you, MaryAnn. May you live one hundred years. May you live one hundred years..."

More like: May you live a thousand years and never hunt again.

Seemed appropriate.

I'm MaryAnn Johanson: writer and ponderer in New York City who drinks too much wine and thinks way too much about such inconsequences as movies, TV, books, and the meaning of life.
