bias alert!: psyched for ‘Cloverfield,’ dreading ‘Rambo’

YES!
current obsession: life on mars
current boyfriend: john simm in anything
i'm psyched: cloverfield
NO!
current enemy: studio fatcats, for being such miserable greedy bastards and letting the writers’ strike drag on
i'm dreading: rambo
(more below the ad... scroll down...)

It’s true that just a week ago, I was not dreading Rambo. But then I learned that it won’t be screened for critics before it opens. That’s not a good sign.

Of course, I’m still waiting to hear if I’ll be able to see Cloverfield before it opens, which has me a bit worried. Still, even if I have to wait to see it in a multiplex, it won’t change how much I’m dying to find out what that monster is...

I'm on my second go-through of Life on Mars, and yes, I’m still obsessed with it, and with its star, John Simm. I hope he appreciates my constancy.

Hey there. If you are a John Simm fan, check out Simm-ply Simm at www.johnsimm.net It's the only decent John Simm forum around. Try it!!!! If youy do, send a pm to me (the mistress- forum founder) and let me know what you think.

Best wishes for 2008!

Rambo is going to be great! You're dreading it? Then don't fucking see it! Cheers.

I hear the monster in Cloverfield is going to be a giant Ed Koch, stomping around New York and asking folks "How am I doing?"

I am psyched to see Cloverfield, out of curiosity more than anything else. Rambo is not worth dreading; it should just be ignored.

You don't really understand the whole film criticism thing, you do?

Yeah, I'm pretty psyched myself as to what that Cloverfield monster will look like. Hopefully something a little more Lovecraftian and disturbing than a lot of the crap we've been getting lately?

Here's a clip of your boyfriend and your ex dancing to Kylie Minogue on 'Jools' Hootenanny', a two-hour musical extravaganza shown every New Year's Eve/Day, with a countdown to midnight, on BBC2. The host's arrival by Tardis is a way of hinting that it's prerecorded, and that he hasn't really persuaded the likes of Paul McCartney to spend the New Year in a TV studio. Newspapers delighted in pointing out afterwards that David Tennant had been to Billie Piper's wedding in a totally different part of the country on December 31. Oh, and you'll see John Simm's wife sitting next to him in this clip. Sorry, but you can't have everything.

Yeah, but England's so tiny that you can get to a "totally different part of the country" just by crossing the street.

Not if you'd been drinking at Billie Piper's wedding reception.

I've seen the Red trailer for the Rambo film, and it's basically an ultragory snuff/revenge film where Rambo gets to kill all the bad Injuns to save the white wumen and poor villagers. The only thing of note is that the Injuns will be played by the evil Burma junta.

So this Jools person is like Dick Clark, then, eh?

From what little I know of Dick Clark (was he the old guy busted in one of Michael Moore's films?) I'd say Jools Holland has a tad more street cred. His late-night BBC2 show 'Later... with Jools Holland' allows bands to show off their live music chops and is eclectic enough to satisfy both mainstream fans and the chin-stroking muso crowd. He's also a very good musician - in the 1970s and 80s he played keyboards with the band Squeeze and these days he tours with a rhythm 'n' blues orchestra. He's a huge devotee of 'The Prisoner', so it wouldn't surprise me if he was a Doctor Who fan too.

Hey, MaryAnn!

I'm with you on the "current enemy". I 100% support the Writer's Strike. Absolutely. What I don't support is the cancelation of major awards shows for films that were made prior to the Strike itself. I think that's going a BIT too far. It's too bad that SOMEBODY (a Producer even) couldn't come up with a witty enough script to make it happen. I feel bad for all those folks involved in the film making itself as well as those that worked hard to be a part of the ceremony in some kind of way too.

I could go on and on but I guess you'll have to read my blog later. :) Just wanted to voice my two cents here, too.

I didn't understand why you where psyched for rambo in the first place. Why would it be screened for critics , the movies going to be super violent, and when the dvd comes out its going to be unrated, for the extra extra gore. 2 things I didnt like in the trailer 1. the title , its too simple 2. he shoots a pistol. If you ever watch the old movies he only uses His knife, Bow, and heavy machine guns. Thats just me though everyone else is probably using the obvious, hes old and used steroids. Im just hoping it is what it is, an old school 80's action movie. if thats the case, then I'll enjoy this movie.

OT you going to put up that AVP:R Review, kinda curious what you thought of that movie.

FYI: The trailer for the new "Star Trek" movie is supposed to be shown before "Cloverfield." Just a head's up.

It's not just about having a script for the awards show: it's that writers and actors will not appear on the awards show because they'd have to cross pickets lines to get to a scab production.

If you read the link in the posting, you'd understand.

Why would it be screened for critics

Why wouldn't it, unless it's truly terrible?

The red light tells you pretty much everything you need to know. I don't have anything interesting to say about the movie -- it mostly bored me -- and I probably won't review it. Sorry.

i did read it, and I thought it was cool you liked Rocky, not many other critics did. But the people who did like it, "got it". But your right if the critic's cant see it then maybe something is wrong. I was skeptical about this movie. I made a bet with some one early last year saying he wouldn't do this film. I lost that bet. but can you blame me for trying to hope he'd call it quits with Rocky. I can only hope he doesn't go out with a bad terrible mockery of a movie.

Hey, look what's on BBC1 next week:
