my week at the movies: ‘The Other Boleyn Girl,’ ‘Son of Rambow,’ ‘Definitely, Maybe’Update! The Son of Rambow screening was cancelled! Doh! But I'm getting compensated with last-minute screenings today of the Oscar-nominated short films: I saw the animated ones this morning (they're wonderful!), and this afternoon it's the live-action ones. I've always wanted to be able to see these before the Oscars, so I had to jump at the chance even though I'd really hoped to be home in my pajamas all day...
Slowish week for me, moviewise, which is good, because I’ve got a ton of non-movie-related work screaming at me to be done. Which sucks, of course. I’m most looking forward to The Other Boleyn Girl [opens wide February 29], which I don’t know much about except that it stars three really interesting actors -- Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman -- and is based on a novel and is probably all sexual intrigue and amazing costumes. Did I mention Eric Bana is in it? Yum. I’m told, though, that I should be looking forward to Son of Rambow [opens limited May 2], too, an English movie about two kids in 1982 who make their own home movie sequel to the Sylvester Stallone war pic. It’s from writer-director Garth Jennings, who made the terrible Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie a few years ago -- it was visually interesting, if not particularly Douglas Adamsey, so I’m willing to give Jennings another shot. Plus, Rambow isn’t a Hollywood film, as Hitchhiker’s was, so that gives it a better change of being decent. Everyone’s all “Oh if you liked Love Actually then you’ll love Definitely, Maybe” [opens wide February 14], which I hope turns out to be true, because I mostly can’t stand Ryan Reynolds, who’s starring in this one. It’s also got some folks I do like, though, including Rachel Weisz and Elizabeth Banks and Kevin Kline and Derek Luke, so maybe I’ll survive.
