watch it: “TrashIn' the Big Apple”

New York is one of the greenest cities in the country, but we waste more food than anywhere else. There’s an easy fix:

This is a great idea. We started composting several years ago, and it's amazing how much of our trash is actually compostable. It ends up on the pile behind our yard and is eventually used in our vegetable garden.

It's also important to buy in bulk and avoid products that are individually packaged as much as possible. I hope more cities invest in composting programs and encourage people to participate.

I worked in the food service industry (movie theater) in my teens and it's criminal how much trash people generate, how much food they throw away (expensive food too, I might add), and most of all how incredibly lazy they are about simply throwing garbage away.

Sorry, I didn't watch the whole thing (Well, I am at work and am supposed to be working) but I wondered if this was about the people who eat food from the garbage.

Wait, I found a link. They call themselves Freegans: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11154276/

I can get behind composting (composting is cool) but not eating from the garbage. Ugh.

Oh, here is the Freegan website, if you are interested.

Too weird for me. Wish I had something pithy to add...

My sister, while not a freegan, does "dumpster dive" on a regular basis. It's not people licking old wrappers or munching on wilted lettuce, as much as its finding fresh food, that restaurants/bakeries are required to throw out, and reusing it. There is an art and science to it, avoiding mold and other things. But you'd be amazed and whats thrown out. A long time ago she found a rather expensive tent, thrown out, either for not selling or some defect, and the tent was cut open, to make it unusable. She found it, sewed it up, and was good to go.
