‘Doctor Who’ is evil

Apparently I was wrong when I said that the entirety of England has gone geeky over Doctor Who. From Wiltshire Times and Chippenham News:

(more below the ad... scroll down...)

A TROWBRIDGE Christian who renounced the evil of Dr Who in favour of his religion is selling his collection on internet auction website eBay.

Simon White, 47, became obsessed with Dr Who from a very early age and started collecting and building life-size models.

He shares his home in Boundary Walk with a full-size Tardis that he built himself, a huge Dalek, two Cybermen and model of Dr Who's robotic dog K-9.

The collection, which Mr White estimates is worth nearly £7,000, was built up over a number of years but is to be cast aside because of his religious beliefs.

Dr Who and his materialistic obsession with it represents the "greatest lie that Satan ever told" according to Mr White....

He said: "God delivered me from the evil that is Dr Who, materialism and alcoholism.

It’s kind of funny, because just last night I was drinking wine and watching that new Pompeii episode of Doctor Who and noting how particularly in love with my widescreen TV I am when David Tennant is on it...

whereas some have embraced Doctor Who as a religion. see the Home on the Strange entries:

From the comments under the article you cite:

"Firstly I would like to thank Benjamin Parkes, and the Wiltshire Times for a tremendous article with pictures, and their support in helping me sell my collection. I do not remember using the word "evil" and never said Dr Who was evil. My obsession with it was very unhealthy... "

This is from the man the story is about.

This story has gone round the Internet in spectacular fashion, yet nobody bothered to check the poor man's comments which were posted on Sat 22 Mar 08, the day after the article first appeared. It was his obsession with Doctor Who that was unhealthy, NOT Doctor Who, itself.

Sadly, we still tend to believe what the press tell us, whether they spin it to their own needs or not we should be looking for alternative viwepoints.

A story with a low profile such as this, reported locally and picked up by a newsagency gets this kind of blanket treatment, and its sad.

On my website I did raise the issue of whether or not he was giving his Who-gear proceeds to charity. Surely if he feels Doctor Who failed him, theres no reason for him to profit from him.

I notice that this has not been satisfactorily addressed by the gentleman in question's response, instead declaring it "an assumption".

He should face facts, he needs help and investing his life into God, Doctor Who, whatever isnt going to help him until he comes to terms with himself.

Whether the subject of the article is misquoted or not, the fact that a newspaper thinks this is newsworthy is bizarre enough to warrant mentioning.

If a grown man has enough time on his hands to build a full-scale TARDIS, Dr. Who is the least of his problems.

I don't know if I'd go that far. Is it okay is a grown man spends his free time building model trains or organizing a fantasy baseball league? Are there prescribed ways in which we are supposed to be spending our free time?
