opening wide today: ‘Prom Night,’ ‘Street Kings,’ ‘Smart People’

Prom Night
It’s one of those not-screened-for-critics non-R-rated “horror” movies, so you know what to expect: bad pseudo teen actors running around not quite half naked getting hacked to death in not quite graphic ways. Though the title suggests that anyone not a jock or a cheerleader in high school will find the setting horrific in its own way. (I’m happy to give this one a pass)

Street Kings
Keanu Reeves is veteran Los Angeles cop Tom Ludlow, who has to do something or other to defend his honor in the dog-eat-dog cop culture of that city. Also starring guys who actually go around in public calling themselves names like “Common” and “The Game,” so don’t expect a weepy chick flick. (my review is coming later today or tomorrow)

Smart People
The title’s kinda ironic, see, cuz the flick is about people who are doctors and university professors and young Republicans and the like who act really dumb about life. And Thomas Haden Church as the dumb guy has to point out the error of their ways. Starring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Ellen “Juno” Page as the smart people. (review coming shortly)
