is it heartless of me to say...
...that I’m not sorry the New York City backlot at Universal Studios was among the assets destroyed in the big fire there this weekend?
The usual caveats: I’m glad no one was seriously hurt, it’s a good thing only duplicate video and film was lost, it’s a shame a lot of movie history has been destroyed, etc. But this:

could only look like New York City to someone who’s only ever seen it in the movies... when it was replaced by a backlot.
(The image is from a New York Times article from 2004 about the return of the New York backlot.)

It's the Sesame Street set!
I've never been to NYC, but similarly, thanks to all the incentives that British Columbia gives to filmmakers, I've grown tired of yet another Pacific Northwest "Alien Planet" (see especially TV shows and miniseries such as BSG and Tinman but also a lot of movies). Ferns? Check. Moss? Check. Cedars? Check.

As Colonel Jack O'Neill snarked on *Stargate SG-1* once, "It's a great green universe we live in, isn't it?"

Of course there are trees in New York. They just aren't on hills in the immediate background. :->

Didn't the Hill Valley clocktower burn down? That part makes me sad.

Yes, the "Back to the Future" town square backlot was also destroyed, which is too bad.
