daily list: the 5 films I’m most looking forward to...

...over the rest of the summer. And by that I mean till the end of August. I peeked ahead to September, since that is still technically part of summer, but the movies then are starting to feel like fall movies. So we’ll deal with those later.

It’s a grim six weekends of new movies ahead of us when this is the best I can hope for:

1. The X-Files: I Want to Believe. This DVD collection, meant to prepare us for the movie, suggests that this could rank among some of the best episodes of the show, which were always the standalone monster stories.

2. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. I know I’m in a minority, but I like the Mummy movies. They’re goofy, but that’s what I like. I worry about Maria Bello replacing Rachel Weisz, but Bello is always fantastic, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

3. Hamlet 2. Mostly cuz I wish I’d thought of this. And Steve Coogan is a hoot.

4. Swing Vote. A political dramedy in the middle of summer? Feels like an autumn movie to me. But it features Kevin Costner as a Regular Guy(TM), and that’s when he’s at his best.

5. Tropic Thunder. The audacity of Robert Downey Jr. playing a white actor who has himself dyed black is the big draw for me. I just hope they don’t screw it up.

I heard rumors that it might not be good and it's just "an extended length episode" . . . and I was like, damn, that's exactly what I'm hoping it is.

Er, my previous comment refers to X-Files.

I hope it has at least some what of a feature film feel like "fight for the future" did. Like that freaking scary ass ice aged alien, that thing made the movie.

Damn NoRomo bee!

...you had to be there...

I didn't like the first X-Files film as much as I'd wanted to. They revamped the existing alien mytharc stuff from the tv show to make the whole thing more like "Aliens" with the alien chest-bursting stuff.

If this is along the lines of the MOTW type episodes, here's hoping it's more like Clyde Bruckman than that Teso Dos Bichos... killer kitties... arrrgghh...

When those are the best movie you can hope to see...I am really glad I'm not a movie critic.

I love Billy Connolly, but not enough to see the X Files that looks like a stupendous mess.

The Mummy...oh god no, not another one. Not even for the lovely John Hannah.

Hamlet 2. I loved the trailer. I hated the trailer. At the same time! Might see it on cable or something.

Swing Vote. Y'know, I thought that was Billy Bob Thornton, and was stunned about mid-way through the trailer to realize it was really Kevin Costner. I just don't think it's going to work, but it has a great supporting cast and a fun idea.

Tropic Thunder...I'm really on the fence on this one, though I haven't seen the trailer yet.

The Mummy looks a lot like the game Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. But I enjoyed that game so I guess I'll see the movie.

I don't see it on your list Mj, but, I, personally am looking forward to the star wars cartoon.

I'm dreading the Clone Wars movie.

Why on god's green earth is Lucas doing a cartoon about the prequel universe no one gives a shit about? If he wants to make a cartoon why not do the further adventures of Luke Skywalker or Han Solo? You know, those characters people actually LIKED.

I feel the clone wars is going to Justify how episode 2 sucked by shining some creativity on the prequel characters. And maybe we can forgive the prequels in a sense we can look at Lucas and say ok Lucas you tried but we much rather go back to the old later episodes.

I wouldn't go near the Clone Wars movie if you paid for my ticket and threw in free popcorn and a large root beer and a ticket to see The Dark Knight afterwards. If it was animated at Pixar-level quality, maybe; but the trailer makes it look like they're using the same computer animation technology they use on Saturday morning cartoons nowadays. In other words, cheap.

I'd much rather see more of Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars cartoons, which at least were done with a sense of humor (not to mention that classic Dexter's Laboratory look-and-feel), than some pseudo-serious, poorly-animated CGI drek.

Maybe there make one thats just all humor featuring C-3P0 R2D2 , Jar Jar Binks and the Ewoks. And I could guest star as a Jedi master and I hang out in the Ewok Village for the whole episode.
